What is Service Learning?

Service learning is an educational experience in which students participate in an organized activity involving service in a community. In performing that service, students partner with the community to identify its needs. Together with the community, the students apply solutions based on learning they have garnered in the classroom. Afterwards, students spend time reflecting on what they have learned during their service.

Students gain an increased understanding and appreciation for their discipline as well as for civic engagement. The ultimate goal is that both the students and the community participants benefit from the project and are transformed through the partnership.
