Prior to the Commission's Aug. 16 public hearing, there will be
a dedication of a new Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails interpretive
historical marker at 9:30 am at the Macon City Hall, 700 Poplar
St. Macon may C. Jack Ellis will speak at the dedication of Macon's
first GCWHT marker. Commission members are invited to attend the
ceremony.

The Commission's Historical Tourism Committee will
meet at 11:00 am on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, in the offices of
the DeKalb Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is located at

The June 24, 2002 Atlanta Journal-Constitution features a story about the new SAM Shortline excursion train that will begin running from Cordele to Plains in October. The train, which has been described as a "rolling state park" is intended to promote tourism in southwest Georgia. Commission member Sen. The June 8, 2002 issue of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution features a story on Commission member and Atlanta History Center executive director Rick Beard. Unfortunately for Georgia, the article announces that Rick has accepted the position of chief operating officer of the New York Historical Society. Prior to accepting his current position at the Atlanta History Center in 1992, Rick was associate director of the Museum of the City of New York. The Commission's new website was launched on May 22, 2002. Members are asked to check to make sure names, titles, addresses, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses are correct. Members are also asked to send web addresses of their organization or agency, as well as those of organizations that have information related to Georgia history and historical tourism.
The May 22, 2002 edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution features a story about James Oglethorpe's hometown of Godalming, England, and how Georgia delegations periodically visit.
